New at Spokes!
This fall marks 2 years since the founding of Spokes on a Wheel! Over the summer, we considered how our company has grown since its beginnings and the feedback we’ve received on what more we can offer. Last year, we integrated significant new offerings into our business, such as free resources, group classes, and test prep.
This fall sees the launch of new programs and policies. Read about each one below.
Free Parent Check-ins
Our new policies include free 25-minute parent calls to provide comprehensive support to students and families. These can be booked upon request or directly through our calendars.
Office Hours
Starting mid-October, we will offer bi-monthly office hours. This service is free for our clients and families to drop in with questions about their assignments or our services. This is a great opportunity for in-between session help and for clients to meet other students who are working on the same topics. Stay tuned for scheduling information coming soon!
Price Updates for New Clients
Starting this fall, our prices vary based on the type of service rendered. This change is due to market research and our growing understanding of the impact our services provide. Current clients will retain their original rates and we continue to consider discounted pricing based on need.
Our tutoring and consulting rates (per 50-minute session):
$100 grades k-8
$120 grades 9-12+
$150 test prep and specialized services
$60 groups and classes
The Digital SAT
We’ve invested constant effort this year to master the challenges and simplifications of the new, digital SAT. The updated format is substantially shorter, has no long-form reading, reintroduces poetry and vocabulary questions, and features tools like a built-in Desmos graphing calculator.
To keep you fully informed, we have compiled an absolutely comprehensive guide to the new SAT with everything from specific section content and scoring methods to exam dates and accommodations laid out in detail and compared side-by-side with the ACT. Our website offers additional resources for taking full-length practice tests, building a test-prep plan, and more.
New Resource: Reading Fluency Strategies
As educators, we still see the effects the pandemic has had on students' basic academic skills. The two arenas where this is most evident are math and English. Our newest free resource on reading fluency provides several strategies for younger students who are looking to improve their reading fluency. This resource also provides a complete list of diphthongs and triphthongs. If your student is struggling in this field, this is a great way to get them started.
Here’s a preview of this resource!
1. When reading out loud, take breaths as a way to control gaining extra time. For example, if you struggle to sound out proper nouns that you haven’t seen before, pause and take a deep breath to give yourself time to read the word in your head before out loud.
2. Take exaggerated breaks at all punctuation marks.
3. Practice reading along with an audiobook (play with a speed that fits your needs)
